Theory Subjects
While you have to be able to manipulate the controls of an aircraft, the technical nature of aviation means that you have to understand the theory of the multiple elements that allow you to conduct a safe flight. This is not just a case of passing some exams and forgetting about it. You need to retain this knowledge so you can call on it as needed. A sound knowledge of theory can also mean faster progress with the practical side of your training.
Each countries regulator usually sets the syllabus and testing regime for theory exams so please use the links at the bottom of the page for your area of the world.
There are of course different levels of theory examination with each successive level building on the one before. The progression is usually
- Basic Aeronautical Knowledge
- Private Pilot Licence
- Commercial Pilot Licence
- Airline Pilot Licence
You may also be required to sit theory exams for
- Instrument Rating
- Basic Gas Turbine
- Instructional Techniques

There are of course a number of ways to prepare for these exams. They include
- Self study at home
- Part or full time study at a Ground Theory School
- Full time study as part of an Aviation Degree at a University or College
- Theory classes as part of an integrated Full Time course
You of course need to choose the type of course that suits your style of learning and your personal circumstance. In summary, regardless of whether you self study or attend courses, the more reading and study you do to supplement your training the better.
