British Airways Airline Pilots

Becoming a commercial pilot is an exciting challenge and many aspiring commercial pilots look to hold a position in a national or regional airline.  Although you will normally join an airline as a first or second officer , all airlines are looking for future captains and their selection processes reflect this.

Most airlines require you to have significant flight experience before  you apply, however an increasing number of airlines have direct entry or cadet schemes where the airline itself will provide your ab-initio (initial) training.

Some airlines will ask you to pay for the cost of your aircraft type training and some will “bond” you to the airline. This means that if you leave before an agreed time you will need to pay a penalty payment.  This reflects the hundreds of thousands of dollars it costs to train an airlines pilot.

You may find that you start your career in general aviation (non-airline) and then move to airline flying as you gain more experience.

The video below is a recruitment video for Emirates Airlines. Although obviously promotional it provides a good overview of life as an Emirates Airline Pilot.
