Worldwide Medical Requirements

Home > Starting Out > Aviation Medicals > Worldwide Medical Requirements

The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) sets the medical standard for all signatory countries and even those countries that are not ICAO members tend to follow their guidelines.

The regulators for each country then issue licences for civil aviation in accordance with their own regulations which are based on the standards and procedures set by ICAO.

Regardless of the country you will find that there are different medical requirements for different levels of pilot licence.

In the United States for example the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues three classes of airman medical certificate.

First Class Medical:  Airline Transport Pilot, valid for 12 months if you are under 40 years old and 6 months for pilots aged 40 and above.

Second Class Medical: Commercial Pilot allowing you to be paid for your services and valid for 12 months

Third Class Medical: Private Pilot, valid for 60 months if you are under 40 and 24 months if you are over 40.
